Hospital School Extreme Makeover

UNC Healthcare has been updating flooring and paint in the Children's Hospital so it is now the school's turn for a makeover. The teachers sorted through the files and files of papers that had accumulated over ten years and on Friday March 29 everything was picked up and taken to storage. If all the work is on schedule, we will move back into our new quarters on Monday April 8. In the meantime, the Pediatric teachers from Children's Hospital have taken one box each of files and supplies  to the other part of our school in the Neuroscience Hospital, sharing office space with our colleagues.  Shortly after we move back in there will be a grand opening and dedication of the Lookout Terrace which is right outside of our area. We are looking forward to new beginnings and spring weather on the horizon.

Mini Moo Update

Our two mini moos were packed up and taken off to a great adventure a month ago.  "Dottie" will make an appearance at Run for the Derby, an event held on Kentucky Derby Day, May 4."Cows in Children's Literature" was successfully auctioned on eBay.  Proceeds from the mini moos will help support the NC Children's Hospital. The Literature Cow's new owners contacted us when they found out that she was painted by patients at the Children's Hospital. Here are excerpts from an email from Dr. Wallace D. Brown who is a doctor in the Pediatric Clinic here in the hospital who gathered funds from his colleagues to bid on her.

"Our purpose is to have her highlight the importance of reading and books to parents and children as they are in the Waiting Room as they wait to be called  for their appointments. We plan to have her in a small corral such that the kids can touch and pet, but not climb on her and have all the books that are displayed on the cow available for reading. These books will be kept in her pasture at her feet  so they are forever present hoping to keep the flame alive for parents reading to their children... We are eager to get the cow on display and functional as soon as we can construct her mini-corral."

We are very happy that the mini moo our students worked on has found the best home possible right here in the Hospital!

Galapagos Islands Presentation

Jackcyln Ngo, one of the Hospital School's former tutors, visited the school today and gave a presentation about  her semester abroad in the Galapagos Islands. Ms. Ngo studied at the Galapagos Institute of Arts and Sciences in partnership with Universidad San Francisco de Quito on San Cristobal Island which is part of the Galapagos archipelago. UNC and USFQ share a science research center there which teaches students about the fragile ecosystem and how to protect the flora and fauna unique to the islands. She explained to the students the history of the Galapagos Islands, the growth in population and tourism and the effect this is having on the ecosystem.
Ms. Ngo is a UNC Teaching Fellow and is currently in her final semester, preparing for student teaching of Pre-Calculus and Core Math at the Durham School of the Arts.

Cows in Schools

Chris

Sam
The Hospital School has been chosen to participate in “Cows in Schools”, an extension to the state-wide “CowParade North Carolina 2012”. Perhaps you have noticed some of the life-size painted and decorated cows around Chapel Hill! Selected schools will paint smaller versions of the three-dimensional fiberglass cows.   Each “mini-moo” is about 28” tall by 48” long and positioned as grazing, sitting or standing. The Hospital School was given a grazing and standing cow that we have chosen to paint Carolina blue following up with creative painting on each cow. We have chosen the themes of “Glamour Cow” and of “Cows in Children’s Literature”.

Our students are enjoying this fun task of creative painting as well as an opportunity to contribute to a worthwhile fund raiser. Selected cows from various schools will be auctioned off in a silent auction at the CowParade North Carolina on February 2, 2013 at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to North Carolina Children’s Hospital.

History Lesson with Mosaic Tiles

Chris S. a pediatric burn patient, since August, participated in the Kidzu Mosaic Tile Program as part of his school lesson.  While learning about Ancient Greece, the art of mosaics was one of his lessons.  Thanks to Kidzu, Chris was able to make a Mosaic tile after learning about them in his history lesson.  Tiles like the one Chris made will go back to Kidzu Children’s Museum and be used as the walls and floors of their new Museum location.
